Magic Milk

Ok so the milk itself isn't magical but my toddler loved this easy activity.

It takes only a few minutes to set up, you can do it a few times, or transition in to making milk soup. So what are we doing? We are watching what happens when you add a tiny bit of soap to milk. The fat particles in milk will move around when you add soap, so when you add food coloring an explosion of colors occurs. Try it out!

What do you need?

  • Plate
  • Q Tips
  • Small bowl
  • Dish soap

  • Cow Milk (we used whole)
  • Food coloring or liquid watercolors

Wash hands

20+ seconds.

Water and soap. Even though we won’t eat this we are in the middle of a global pandemic!

Lay it all out

This activity goes quick, so its best to have it all out!

Pour milk on to a plate

You want a dish that is wide enough to see the reaction. Bowls work too but a plate with a bit of depth works best!

For younger kids pour some milk into a measuring cup so they can pour it themselves.

Add color

We ran out of food coloring so used liquid watercolor. Have your child add colored drops on to the milk.

Try to get the colors close together for a bigger reaction.

Practice colors as you add them.
