What the Heck Does Eating Organic Food Really Mean and Should We Always Eat Organic Food?
Melissa here! I’m fresh off a trip to the Natural Foods East expo in Baltimore. Over 1500 companies were at the event, and that included Foublie! It was an amazing few days filled with free samples of everything from baby food pouches to chocolate covered crickets to puffed water lily seeds. All tasty! More importantly I met the people behind the brands we love and saw their passion for food, nutrition and the environment.
This got me thinking, and yes I’ll admit I didn’t really know…
What the heck does it mean to be organic??
What is organic?
Organic is a method of growing and processing food (duh, I did know this much). In the US organic means that crops are not grown with synthetic pesticides, GMOs, petroleum-based fertilizers, and sewage sludge-based fertilizers (ew). In livestock raised for meat, eggs and dairy products, organic means that these animals must have access to the outdoors. Animals also eat organic and do not get antibiotics, growth hormones or any animal by-products.
So no pesticides?
Actually there are. Naturally-derived pesticides can be in organic food. Side note: It’s probably impossible to remove all pesticides from our life. Hate to say it but it’s in most grass in public places (like parks!!!), the air and dust. Sorry.
Get to the point, what about baby food?
Well… it’s not that easy… Organic food is expensive, it can be hard to find and let me say it again, it’s expensive! We do know every kiddo needs to get the right amount of fruits and veg. To us that is more important than shopping organic. Sucks, but unfortunately that is the reality of our food system. If you can afford to shop organic without trade offs, why not. Are all ‘conventional’ (aka non-organic) foods equal?
No. Each year the Environmental Working Group tells us which fresh foods we should buy organic if we can. If you are on the fence about shopping organic or you do need to prioritize, avoid the “Dirty Dozen”: Strawberries, Spinach, Nectarines, Apples, Peaches, Pears, Cherries, Grapes, Celery, Tomatoes, Sweet Bell Peppers, and Potatoes. If you are like my home we don’t really pay attention to what we buy organic. We will start! I will also start giving all produce a little rinse and a scrub!
Does organic = healthy?
Nooooooooooo. Organic food can still be unhealthy junk food.
What would Mother Earth choose?
She goes team organic because those farming practices treat her with RESPECT. Organic farming reduces pollution, conserves water, reduces soil erosion, improves the soil and uses less energy. If you don’t really care about what your family eats but care about the planet, the case for organic seems pretty good.
So in conclusion! What should you buy at the store?
